Green Turtle
Green Turtle - At the peak of the nesting season, dozens of Green Turtles come ashore every night in Tortuguero National Park to lay their eggs. Once a female turtle finds a spot on the beach that she is satisfied with she digs a hole in the sand with her back fins and deposits her eggs. Roughly 50 minutes after emerging from the ocean she will then drag herself back into the surf. Sea turtles typically come ashore to lay their eggs under the cover of darkness when the risk of predation is lowest. However, occasionally an individual can be spotted making her way back to the sea at first light.
