High ceilings, original walls made of thick brick, arches and stained glass windows letting in colorful light, all aid in creating the hotel's warm Victorian atmosphere.
Beautiful wallpaper, fine rugs, ceiling fans, mosaic tile floors and English style furniture contrast sharply with the tropical flower gardens "a la tica". The Britannia Hotel is divided in two parts; one is the old house which houses five Deluxe Rooms and five Jr. Suites, as well as the restaurant which occupies what was once the old wine cellar of the house, appropriately named "The Cellar". The new part of the hotel consists of a four-story addition housing 14 standard rooms all of which have T.V. with cable, telephone, private bathroom with bathtub, hot water, safe deposit box and either one king size bed or two single beds. The Deluxe and Jr. Suite rooms have, in addition to all of the items stated for the standard rooms, a desk, a hair dryer in the bathroom and either one king size bed or two queen size beds. |

The house was built in 1910 by the immigrant Cipriano Herrero del Peral, an industrial coffee producer in Costa Rica. The house was designed using different European styles by one of Costa Ricas most prominent architects at the beginning of the XX Century, Jaime Carranza Aguilar. The house would later be home to such prosperous and well-known families as Rohormoser Lahman, and Aguilar Muñoz. In 1992, the remodeling of the house began along with the construction of the annexed building. By the end of 1993, the hotel finally opened its doors. |
