Hey Mike, appreciate the response and the information. I'm planning on mid-Sept. Would like to do a couple other spots too as I plan on being there 7 - 10 days. Any suggestions on what type of itinerary I need to look at?
Once again, thanks for the help.

Hello Oscar
As far as an itinerary goes if you were going to stay 7 days I could put a suggested itinerary together and than you can let me know what you think and than we can add day and or tweak it to what will work best for you.
Once we get the itinerary and the exact dates nailed down than we can look at some airfares ( let me know where you will be flying from?) Hopefully we can find you an early flight in and a late flight out so you can surf your first and last day also.
We have some very good Costa Rica airfare rates that can meet or beat any ones prices out there.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY
DAY 1:arrive we can have our driver pick you up at the airport he will have a sign with your name on it and take you to the Jaco Beach Hotel.
DAY 2:our surfguide will come pick you up and take you surfing that afternoon you could book an adventure tour with the Hotel tour desk.
DAY 3: our surfguide will come pick you up and take you surfing that afternoon you could book an adventure tour with the Hotel tour desk.
DAY 4: our surfguide will come pick you up and take you surfing.
That afternoon our driver will come pick you up and drive you to the QUEPOS/MANUEL ANTONIO beach ( 1 1/2 hr drive) where you can stay at several hotel we offer in that area check out the TICO TRAVEL CENTRAL PACIFIC hotel section http://www.ticotravel.com/index/hotelsmain.htm
DAY 5: our surfguide will come pick you up and take you surfing that afternoon you could book an adventure tour with the Hotel tour desk (we also have a surf school in the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area) Stay that night in a hotel of your choice
DAY 6: FREE DAY
DAY 7: Our driver will come pick you up and drive you back to San Jose airport ( 4 hr ride) or you could take a short hopper flight back to San Jose about a 30 minute ride.
NOTE: the small hopper flights will not allow surfboards over 7ft and even than they can be a problem but I don't think you are bringing a board anyway?.
Ok Oscar let me know what you think and if you would like to go the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area what hotel you would like to stay at check out
the hotel section and let me know if you have any questions. We could also add a rental vehicle if you like while you are at the beach, you could just pick it up in Jaco and drop it off in Quepos that way you don't have to make that big drive to and from San Jose driving along the coast is a breeze.
And you would have your own wheels to cruise around tough you don't need a rental vehicle because our surfguides will provide transfers to and from the lessons and local taxis to go to restaurants ect are very cheap.
Regards.

Hi Mike,
I need some help. My boyfriend and I are headed to CR at the beginning of September and we both want to learn to surf. We are looking for the best place to learn that has nice sandy bottoms for falling, waves that aren't so big to be intimated by. We have been researching and every site says something different and I'm worried that the weather will be crap to learn surfing in the 'green' season.
We will be spending time in Puerto Viejo but have received mixed messages about beginner surfing their - some say great others say for very experienced. Pacific or Caribbean? Where on the Pacific that won't cost allot to travel too as we are looking for a 3 or 4 day surf camp.
Any advice is appreciated.
Tannis |
Hello Tannis
I would say the Quepos/Manuel Antonio Surf camp would fit the bill it is a good consistent wave and a sand bottom like the reef bottom like alot of spots on the Caribean we use a couple of different surf spots in the area depending on the swell conditions and you could stay down town at the Sirena Hotel it is safe clean and very inexpensive the surf lessons will cost $90 per day per person and include about 3 hours of surf instruction per day, surfboard rental and RT transfer to and from your hotel each day.
you can check out the Sirena hotel at
http://www.ticotravel.com/hotels/sirena.htm
Another hotel is the tres banderas it is up on the hill in Manuel Antonio
http://www.ticotravel.com/hotels/tresbanderas.htm
It is not down town so it is alot more quiet the advantage of the Sirena is that being down town you can just walk to restaurants and stores but it is downtown. |

Hey Mike,
I'm getting back into surfing after many years out of the water, and wondering if there are lessons available for someone going through the middle age crazies (again)? If so, where would be the best bet? I'm seriously considering taking at least two weeks off from work in the very near future.
Thanks for your time.
Oscar |
Hey Oscar
man you could have a blast in Playa Jaco world class surf and nightlife you could stay at the Jaco Beach BW hotel and we can have our surfguides pick you up and take you surfing each day for about 3 hours the cost of the surf lessons are $90 per day for a 3 hour long session, RT transfers to and from Hotel and rental board.
You can check out the hotel at http://www.ticotravel.com/hotels/bwjaco.htm
Just let me know if you have any questions I will be happy to book whatever you need.

Hi Mike,
I am an intermediate goofy-footed shortboarder who surfs the Jersey shore. I am comfortable in anyting from waist-1 foot overhead surf, but tend to get a little intimidated when it gets bigger than that. Just got back from 4 months on Australia's gold coast, where my surfing greatly improved. I am looking for some solid lefthanders in CR in march, where would you reccomend staying??.
Thanks so much for your time,
Mike |
Hello Michael
It will be my pleasure to assist you
I think you should consider either
Tamarindo there are a lot of good breaks in that area
or Playa Jaco, Jaco is one of the most consistently waves in CR and there are also a lot of really great surf breaks in the surrounding area
Just let me know if I can assist you in booking any portion of your Surf trip or just answer any further questions you may have.
Best Regards |

Hey Mike.
My name is Geoff, from Canada, and I am looking to attend a surf school/camp in Costa Rica in the fall, but having a tough time finding one that I feel sure about. I'm not a true beginner. I've surfed Vancouver Island, Canada, Paulo Nias, Indonesia, and West Coast, Nicaragua. I feel comfortable getting up and riding straight, but am ready to take my surfing to the next level, as well as learn more about surf etiquette, and the science of surfing. I am serious about getting better, so I need to find a school with professional instructors, and a solid schedule, as well as someplace maybe where the waves aren't super crowded (does that exist outside nicaragua?) I have researched this quite a bit already, but don't really feel I have found one that is as serious of a school as I am looking for. Any suggestions you may have would be really helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time

Hi Mike,
I'll be heading down to Costa Rica the first week of December. I'm having some trouble deciding where to go in order to get some good quality surf that time of year. I'm an intermediate level short board surfer very able to hold my own but by no means a pro. Originally I was planning on heading to the Quepos area but now I'm thinking about heading to Puerto Viejo, what do you think? Any advise would be very appreciated!
Thanks
Heinz |
Hello Heinz,
Quepos/Manuel Antonio area does tend to be very small surf in December
Puerto Veijo can be a little fickle it can either flat of very big that time of year
I think the Tamarindo area might also be a good option
You can check out some of the accommodations we offer in that area under the NW Pacific area on our accommodations page
http://www.ticotravel.com/index/hotelsmain.htm
If you need any more details or I can assist you in booking any portion of your trip please just let me know

| Hello Mike, I
am going to Costa Rica for the second time. Last August I was up by Playa
Grande but this time we are staying at the Hotel Fiesta in Punterenas. I am
wondering if we will be in a good area for surfing and how long the drive in
from our hotel to other surf spots like playa hermosa? Could you also give a
couple recommendations about some good surf breaks in our area?
Thank you
Brandon |
Hello
Brandon, there is very good wave behind the Hotel Fiesta called Boca
Borrance a long left point. But I will warn you the area is not very pretty
and the water is pretty dark due to all the nearby but it can be an awesome
wave. It is about 1 hr plus ride to Hermosa and other breaks like Playa Jaco, Esterillos and Bejuco the surfers guide to Costa Rica also is a great
guide if you need a handbook of breaks anther good place to stay that is
all-inclusive is the Jaco Beach BW if you wanted to stay a couple of nights
some where closer to other breaks.

Howzit,
Mike...
I'm planning my first surf trip to Costa Rica, and was hoping you might be
able to offer a little assistance. We will be 3 travelers in all...one is an
experienced longboarder, and the other two are shortboarders and, although
somewhat less experienced, able to hold their own in a variety of surf
conditions. It looks like we will probably be staying at the Marriott Los
Suenos Resort at Playa Herradura. I was curious to know about the surf spots
in that area....where should we go?! Also, we plan to rent a vehicle out
there so we can travel around a bit and surf a variety of locations...any
recommendations (on car rentals AND places to go)?? And last but not
least...airfare! We''ll be flying out of Miami, FL. I've been checking all
the airlines, and it appears that Martinair is still the cheapest way to get
to Costa Rica.
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge and expertise, and I look
forward to hearing back from you.
Stay
groovy...
Brandon |
Hello Brandon
my name is Mike I am the surf travel planner for Tico Travel I will be happy
to a assist you.
Airfares have gone up substantially because of the rise in fuel and unless
the price of gas goes down you will probably not see the prices on airfare
to Costa Rica drop either it would be best to call one of our agents or go
directly to our online airfare page at
http://www.centralamerica.com/airfares.htm
There are lots of great breaks in the Marriott
los Suenos area like Escondido, Herradura bay, Jaco, Hermosa and Bejuco they
are pretty easy to find
http://www.centralamerica.com/cr/surf/surfintro.htm
If you are on a budget I would recommend
having a rental car meet you right at the airport when you arrive so you
will have some wheels you can check out our rental car prices at
http://www.ticotravel.com/costarica/car.htm

Hey Mike,
I'm trying to plan a week trip for me and some friends and would like to
know where we could find the best right breaks around Christmas time.
Thanks

Orange County, California |
Most of the
people would say the Tamarindo area. Time of year in Costa Rica is pretty
consistent anywhere you decide to go I like the Central Pacific for he first
trip and even the Caribbean side could be big at that time. But I suggest
you book your trip ASAP that time will sell out fasttttttttttttt the Diria
Hotel is good for the Tamarindo area or you can check our hotel section for
other options in other areas of the country.
Talk to you soon

Mike, I'm
wondering how long does it take to drive to Pavones from Quepos? Is it
practical to plan a one week road trip all the way down the coast to Pavones
and back?
Ron |
| Hello Ron
Sure you could definitely get down to Pavones in
back in a week and not be pushing it too much
The drive form Quepos is not nearly as bas as it once was atleast once you
get past Dominical the stretch between Quepos and Dominical along the
coastal highway it still like a wash board but not dangerous.
How are you getting to Quepos? A hopper
flight would be great but you may have a problem getting your boards on
especially if they are over 7ft long so I assume you are driving or getting
a transfer?
