HOWZIT MIKE?
we are planning our first trip to Costa Rica possibly next March or April.
My husband and I are traveling with one or two other couples and I am the
only surfer (longboarder). Just wondered, not knowing anything about the
surf in Costa Rica and being with company that is game but not experienced,
where is a safe but fun place to longboard. We have made no other plans as
of yet and are really open to the the adventures to be had there, of varying
degree, but surfing is definitely something I want to include for at least
part of this trip. Thanks a bunch . . or as we say in Hawaii, where I
learned to surf and grew up, Mahalo Brah!

Hello Cassandra
It is a pleasure hearing from you and I know you will enjoy CR I have had
people say it reminds them of Hawaii of 30 or 40 years ago. I think the
central Pacific area around Playa Jaco or Manuela Antonio area are great or
even up in NW part area of Costa Rica at Tamarindo would both be a great
place for Surfers of all levels. The
central Pacific is very nice and much more tropical whereas the NW area is
very dry but the beaches tend to be a little more white. I think everyone would like Manuel Antonio there are lots of great hotels
and they have an awesome Rainforest Park with lots of monkeys and nice
gentle but consistent surf with a nice soft sand bottom.
We even have a surf camp there if anyone in the group would like some
lessons (rental board included)
To get to Manuel Antonio you could take a hopper flight (but only if you are
not bring your long board because they do not allow boards over 7ft long)
you could rent a board though. Or we can have our driver transfer you there
its about a 4 hour drive or we can have a rental vehicle for you at the
airport when you arrive and you can drive yourselves ( you would probably
need a van)
Just let me know what you think I can help you plan you trip and book
whatever you may need International airfares, Hopper flights, rental
vehicles, surf lessons or surf guide and or accommodations. You guys may even
want to throw in a couple of days either at the Peace Lodge or go up to he
Arenal Volcano
Check out all our accommodation on our site at http://www.ticotravel.com/index/hotelsmain.htm
Look forward to hearing from you

Mike,
I've been surfing over 30+ years, my fiancé is a beginner and I've never
been to Costa Rica. I'm looking for a mellow longboard type wave where she
won't get worked and I can have fun also. Pointbreak, not too crowded etc….
Any suggestions (hotels, breaks) would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks, dan |
| Hello Dan
I don’t know of any point breaks right off hand that would work for a
beginner.
Boca Borranca would be a very easy breaking wave but the water is very dark
because of all the rivers and mangroves in the area and the bottom is kind
of nasty river rock making getting out al little tricky for beginners. I
have taken beginners there before and they had a hard time with it. And it
is just not a very pretty area on CR to stay it is an old fishing town with
not much to offer best to go there just for a day trip of surfing but not a
great place to stay.
One of the most popular beaches for surf schools and camps for beginners is
Jaco Beach at high tide it can be a very fun wave and break with a lot less
power than some of the surrounding area breaks like Playa Hermosa and
Escondido. Plus Jaco is probably one of the most consistent surf breaks in
CR so you are sure to get surf and there are a lot of other breaks in the
vicinity. Plus there are lots of other things to do if you guys are
interested like National Parks, Horseback riding, canopy tours etc. And you could still drive up to Boca Borranca to give it a try it is about
one hour drive North.
There are hotels in the Jaco area form 3 to 5 star the Jaco BW Hotel is a
3-4 star hotel not fancy but very conveniently located on the beach with
surf right behind the hotel. You can check out some of the hotels available
in the central Pacific area at http://www.ticotravel.com/index/hotelsmain.htm
Best Regards

| Hi Mike! My
boyfriend and I are going to Nosara, Costa Rica this Thursday. He surfs and
I plan to learn by taking some lessons while down there. Any advise on the
surf in Nosara for a beginner?
Thanks,
Catey Miller |
Hello Catey
Nosara is a great place to learn to surf the waves are consistent and they
are not extremely powerful.
I am sure one of the local hotels or surf shops can set you up with a rental
board and lessons.
Nothing better than swimming to get into paddling shape and give yourself
more confidence in the water or better yet do some paddle boarding before
you go down to CR.
Surfs up!
